We made a transition schedule personal stuff and something that was just good for business so we moved to Thursday nights at seven o'clock. It's going to take a little bit of adjusting. I get that. We're adjusting as well.

Speaker 1:

So thank you for all the comments and the questions coming in from the faithful listeners and supporters of our show. Speaker 1:

So let's talk a little bit about football today. This will be the content for our entire show. I want to kind of start off with what I heard from Joel Klatt. You may know him as a Fox College football broadcaster. I highly respect his work, one of the few folks I actually like listening to and I love his insights. He's a former college player with Colorado. He has some great insights. He dropped his 12-team bracket prediction, which I thought was so interesting. I said let's talk about it on the show tonight. So he had his 12 team bracket. His power, four teams. He had his first round and his national championship winner the whole nine yards. We're going to kind of run through that a little bit and see what you guys think about what he was saying.

Speaker 1:

So in regards to the big 10, most of you guys are probably predicting the same thing. Joe Clapp predicted Ohio State over Oregon. I think I've been hearing it kind of going both ways Oregon over OSU or Ohio State over Oregon. I heard it both ways. Oregon's path is relatively really easy. They got a tremendously easy schedule for their first season in the Big Ten. I think that a lot of the Big Ten teams are going to be kind of targeting them for coming in with the swagger they had after last season. They only have probably two preseason-ranked opponents on the entire schedule, so that's going to make it a lot easier for them to kind of get to this place that Joel Klatt is predicting. They play Ohio State at home and they play a Michigan team that lost most of their key figures in last year's national title run in the NFL draft, leaving for the NFL. So they're going to be playing them, probably in Oregon, I think. So Ohio State is loaded. I've got to give them props for that they definitely are. I'd be surprised for them to not be at the top of the conference. But Joel Clasp predicts that Ohio State's going to win over Oregon to win the Big Ten. Love to hear your thoughts on that as well. On the SEC side he's predicting Georgia over Texas Pretty interesting. I don't really have a problem with that. I think that Missouri has a favorable matchup there.

Speaker 1:

Old miss has talent, believe it or not. They were really good last year. To be honest with you, they're a lot better this year. Oklahoma could be a factor as well. Uh, georgia has some great things going on. We watched kind of some of the games in the preseason. If you have been watching carson beck, I want to see how he was going to adjust. Watched kind of some of the games in the preseason. If you have been watching Carson Beck, I wanted to see how he was going to adjust to kind of step back into that role with the team changing a little bit, with him not having his safety plug in Brock Bowers anymore because he's moved on to the NFL. So I'm kind of curious about how he would handle that. We'll see. They got a smart coach in Kirby Smart, no pun intended. So we'll see how that looks.

Speaker 1:

On the Big 12 side, this is a prediction that I actually agree with Utah over Kansas. I kind of feel like Utah kind of came on at the end of the season last year and they have what I think is a really good team. I don't know if they're going to be in the college football playoffs We'll see how Joel Klatt predicts that but they have a nice situation. In moving to the Big 12. Kyle Whittenham is a really good coach. Can't argue that. Really. They've won their conference every year and I think that I watched Cam Wiseman. That's their quarterback. I watched him play. There were some challenges with him decision-making-wise, but they're obviously getting better. So Utah is definitely a favorite to do that. So I think the Big 12 and winning over Kansas makes sense. The Big 12 is not the strongest conference in the world, so it makes a lot of sense there.

Speaker 1:

On the ACC side he has Miami over Florida State side, he has myron miami over florida state. Um, I think that's very doable. If cam ward is who we think he's going to be. Uh, a lot of predictions saying he can be the best quarterback coming out of the draft, maybe the best quarterback this year. We'll see if that's so or not, but he has the opportunity to be that, especially in the acc that matter. The man is talented, without question, so definitely right on his arm if you expect to win a conference championship. He has his top five Ohio State, georgia, utah, miami and Notre Dame, which Notre Dame never gets left out. Independent that they might be, they never get left out of the conversation. So I love seeing that.

Speaker 1:

I don't know how you feel about Marcus Freeman as a head coach. I think he does well. I don't put him in my top five best coaches in college football, but he's up there. I think they already kind of have a good shot to have a playoff spot and secure a home game in the first round. We'll see how that goes. I guess you have to find out.

Speaker 1:

If you like Raleigh Leonard, I wonder about that. Herbert said he disagrees with the Miami. Love If Cam Ward is who we say, if he is who we think he's supposed to be, or he is who everybody thinks he's going to be, miami might come in and surprise you, man. So we'll see. But bringing in quarterback Riley Leonard, I wonder about that. I've watched some of his game before he came over. They have a favorable schedule, so that's going to help out in his favor. But you have to really think, is he? Because I think if he got drafted today he'd be serviceable in the NFL. He probably wouldn't be an elite starter in the NFL right now as it stands. So I wonder what he brings to the table for Notre Dame in this highly competitive market that he'll be playing in the teams he'll be coming up against. He's going to have a really weak schedule. There's going gonna be some challenges to them, kind of going further than they have last year.

Speaker 1:

Uh, texas is a name that joe class talking about. They're going to be talking about that a lot because ever since they hit a big 10 their name kind of been on top of everybody's list. Uh, steve sarkeesian has those boys playing at top speed. They always have a chance to go far and do things that are considered impossible. I know Georgia fans probably won't enjoy this comment I'm about to make, but they have a chance. Texas could beat Georgia. Georgia, they lost some talent to the NFL. Some things have changed a little bit, but I think at the end of the day, I think Georgia is probably the stronger team, but we'll see that Texas does have a chance. You can't count them out, but we'll see how that goes. And they are playing in Atlanta, so home field advantage and all that stuff. So I think that there's a good chance that Texas is going to definitely get beat by Georgia. I think our guy Herb agrees with that. He had Texas at going 11-11, no worse than 10-2. There could be a bump in the road, I guess, at some point, just because of who they had to face and the increased talent they have to face now Facing Oklahoma as part of their regular schedule with the rivalry. Say that three times fast.

Speaker 1:

What my question is with this Texas team is Quinn Ewers. I thought he was coming out into the draft. I think I had him slotted somewhere around maybe six or seven quarterback Excuse me. So I wasn't sure where he'd be a good fit. I had some teams that I think I mentioned on a previous show, but not quite sure where that is now. But I haven't had him somewhere slotted in that realm. But he's still staying with texas for another year, so that's good.

Speaker 1:

Uh, is he going to take them to the next level? They got some, a lot of guys that they lost. I think I might probably have some notes on some of that stuff here too. Uh, I know that you got some O-line challenges. I heard about that. We kind of seen some of that. They got a vet in Banks but aside that, the O-line is pretty much untested right now. They had an awesome one-two punch in Baxton Blue. They're running backs, but I think backs is out with a knee injury. So now we're looking at, you know, blue having to carry the load and I wonder if he can do that. They're going to need that in order to compete in a conference with such strong defenses in it, particularly the Oregons and the Michigans. I'm not sure they're on their schedule. I think Texas has Michigan, oklahoma and Georgia on their schedule, so it's going to be tough as it is. So we'll see how that goes All right.

Speaker 1:

So moving on, we got Oregon. The Ducks are pretty much everybody that's talking, everybody that's analyzing this. They're saying that the Ducks are going to be in the playoffs without questions, like almost like they're inevitable. I think that's interesting. I'm not going to poo that idea and say it can't happen, but it's interesting that they got them in this place almost automatically, like they came over from their own conference from the pack and they're moving into the big 10 and they're automatically in the college football playoffs like they're that much better and I guess to a large to a large they're a lot better than a lot of the teams that they come in the conference with. They're growing. I think most of the teams in the basin have improved, even the Indiana's in the, in the Illinois they've improved. Then the Brassets have improved.

Speaker 1:

But Oregon is just a different beast and I kind of feel like you know, I don't know if I believe in Dylan Gabriel as much. I know when he was in Oklahoma he was a big deal out there and it was hard to you know, do some mixed reviews about his time in Oklahoma. But for me I'm like he's going to be in Oregon. It's going to be a big stage. He's going to have to do things that Bo Nix was able to do very well in his offense under Dan Lanning.

Speaker 1:

Getting the ball out of his hands number one is a big deal. Did he do that in Oklahoma? I can't say that definitively, but in this case in Oregon he has to do it because of who he's going to be facing defensively. They have OSU and Michigan on their schedule. Those two alone are enough to drop you down to a 10-2 if things don't go well from the quarterback standpoint. So he's got to already be slated to be in the playoffs. We'll see if that's the case, but that's what they have going on right now. I think they're going to be facing I think they have the. Are they facing the Crimson Tide? Are they on the Alabama schedule? I don't think so. Okay, so all we're going to have to slide up for the playoffs. So we'll see how that goes. And while you're saying that Texas has one of the easiest schedules, without question we really got to get by Georgia. Well, I don't think there's going to be a cakewalk for them to get past Oklahoma, and on top of that, I past Oklahoma, and on top of that, I don't think it's going to be a cakewalk to get past Michigan either.

Speaker 1:

I know that nobody is saying much about us. Nobody's thinking that Michigan is going to do anything this year because we lost so many pieces, but I think what's being overlooked is how much we have retained and how much is still on the field. Now the question is going to be the quarterback play. Is Alex Orjah going to be able to be mobile and accurate enough to kind of replace what JJ was doing. Let's be fair, jj wasn't throwing a lot. I mean, there was a lot of emphasis on the running game, and Donovan is still back there and we got some guys behind him that are studs that are not being talked about a whole lot. So I think it's something to watch out for too. So I'm not saying they're going to beat Oregon, but it's something to think about. I'm sorry, texas, but we'll see how that looks. It might say they had Texas going undefeated in the regular season. All right, we're going to talk about that Undefeated huh.

Speaker 1:

Joe Klass goes on to say he has Texas at number six, going over Michigan at number 11. It pains me to ever hear that Michigan is going to take a loss, especially after the incredible undefeated season that we had last year. It was monumental. I don't care what people say about it. You can't take it from us what we did on the field, in the field of play. We were juggernauts out there and we just dominated people, pure and simple. I guess in his prediction we take that L, then we get knocked out. We'll see how that looks. He also has Oregon over Alabama.

Speaker 1:

I think a lot of people want to see Lanning and DeBoer kind of face off again. It's not the same team they had last year but it should be still an epic matchup. Both teams are definitely challenging. You can't really deny that. I think that Joe Clatt is thinking that the environment of Oregon because Alabama will be playing on the road is going to be too much for Alabama to handle. We'll see how that goes. I'd love to hear Herbert and Rodgers' thoughts on that. They're big Bama fans. I think they play in plenty of tough environments in the SEC. That should be something that's going to surprise them. But apparently Joe Clatt thinks it's going to be a very big factor in Alabama taking an L against Oregon. In his scenario he has Ohio State winning the Rose Bowl over Penn State, which kind of implied that Penn State is going to be better than us. It's hard for me to imagine. I think I would take Alex Orji over Drew Auer, but that's I just don't. I'm not quite there yet.

Speaker 1:

I think one thing that you hear about we talk about Michigan throughout the next several weeks leading to the season and their first few games, but it's kind of hard to tell what they are. We're talking about stuff that's on paper and you can't really tell from that what's going to take place on the field. I mean, they got talent everywhere on the offense and the defensive side and in the trenches, and it's going to matter how they play together, how they kind of get galvanized under Sherron Moore and some of the returning coaches, coaches, some of the new coaches that are coming in. So we'll see their defense is going to be different with wing martin there. We want to see what they're going to do there. So it's really going to be hard to make a prediction, but people do that because that's the business that they operate in. So they're going to make predictions about who's going to uh beat who, and that's totally fine. Uh, he has texas over utah, notre d Dame over Miami and then in the semifinal, I think, he has Ohio State over Notre Dame and Texas over Georgia in the Cotton Bowl. So those are his predictions. He has Ohio State facing Texas, number one seed versus the number six seed for the national championship. Who do you think is going to win that matchup? I'm excited to hear your thoughts on that one, but that's what he has going on Cool stuff.

Speaker 1:

Ohio State is definitely strong but, to be honest with you. They've always been strong. They've always had talent, from top to bottom. I guess a question to ask yourselves. You can drop your answers in the comment section. Ohio State's been strong since ever. They've always had talent at every level, but they haven't always won a national championship. What are they going to do this year with the talent that they have? Is it automatic, is it a done deal, or is Texas going to pull a win out?

Speaker 1:

In Joel Klatt's scenario, mike is saying he had the one-in podcast, which you can find, of course, on his YouTube channel, search the run-in podcast with Big Mike. He's saying that in this instance, I'd probably say Ohio State for the national championship. Okay, awesome stuff, we'll see. We'll see how that goes down. So drop your questions or comments regarding this. Who do you think wins the national championship, and do you think it's Ohio State? Can they finally pull it out, or is Ryan Day doomed to get fired? We'll see what happens. I know most Michigan fans would be happy to beat them and not win a national championship, which is not my thing, but for me I'm like beat Ohio State and get into the CFP. If we can do that, for me it's a winning season, because we lost.

Speaker 1:

I think last count was 24, 25 players in the draft. You almost got gutted. Some guys stayed when they could have declared and they say we still got Colston Loveson, the tight end, and donovan edwards and will johnson still back there? We got a lot of talent that's still hanging around. So I'm excited about where things are going. For the most part, all right.

Speaker 1:

So one uh segment we've been doing for quite a while, at least the past month or so. I think I get heard to help me out with that one uh, the best units in the game, and we've been breaking down every position and we're coming down to the end of this little game that we're playing. Best units in the game this week's going to be defensive line. Herb dropped all of his predictions or his takes on the best D-lines in the game. I'll be pulling those while I'm pulling mines as well. All right, so this is where Herb got Boom, boom, boom. So Herb's best D-line the Jets, the 49ers and the Browns.

Speaker 1:

Well, great minds definitely think alike. I had some of the same thoughts, but slightly different on the last one, but for me my best unit defensive line-wise is going to be the Jets. Their defensive line is monsters I mean John Franklin Myers. His name gets tossed around a lot when it comes to one of the best D-liners in the game. Bryce Huff is back there too. They brought these guys in and they're going to impact Sounds like right away already in camp, which is not saying a whole lot, but they're predicted to do a lot of great things for the Jets in the season. You know what they're going to need to have that because of the kind of defense that they, what kind of offense they're going to be playing like a highest-powered Miami offense. And then you're talking about some of the other AFC monsters they're going to be going against offensively. A strong defense is going to help Aaron Rodgers and the offense a whole lot.

Speaker 1:

The Hassan Reddick situation is I guess we'll talk about that on a different episode, but that's a problem. He just got there and he's already looking to find his way out. I doubt that the Jets are going to give him his trade request, especially after just getting him in the offseason. So it's going to be a big challenge if he plays up to his capabilities and he's not in his head about the disputes he's having with the team. So we'll see how that goes.

Speaker 1:

Quentin Williams is the name that you hear all the time. He's disruptive, he's fierce, one of the best D-linemen in the game, without question, and it makes them really, really strong. You got those kind of talent and guys that haven't even named yet that are just stellar on that D-line and it's like I don't know who's on their schedule this year, but they're going to have a whole lot of problems. I know Javon Kinlaw is back there too, and CJ Mulder, who I loved when he was playing with Baltimore, he's out there too. It's like this is a monster D-line. So I agree with Herb.

Speaker 1:

The Jets are my number one as well as his. We're. So I agree with her. The Jets are my number one as well as his. We are on the second one as well the 49ers. They lost Eric Armstead, 6'7", 300 and I don't know how many pounds. He was a monster back then. But they got star power. I mean Nick Bosa if he's healthy man, always a defensive player of the year candidate all the time. Quarterback pressures, sacks, this man does it all. Javon Hargrave is as good as you can get as an interior pass rusher, I mean. And they added Leonard Floyd as well, which is a nice compliment. It both is healthy and Floyd's on the other side.

Speaker 1:

This is a really high-end group of D-line guys. For me they were easily my number two best D-line in the game, and usually Herb would give three and I have like about five or six or seven. How many do I have? I got like five this time. So the third one is going to be for me, is going to be for him, it's going to be the Browns. That's what we had to break down for them. I got them at five. So I just kind of break down what I've been seeing in them.

Speaker 1:

Miles garrett I mean honestly he was doing the work all by himself out there last year and the browns had probably one of the top defenses, if not the number one defense, for a good part of the season. It dropped down from uh, from some a week or two here and there, but they were number one almost the entire season, if I'm not mistaken. Correct me on that if I'm wrong, but they had guys they pieced together around him and they were still putting in that work and had a number one defense. So now they've been really intentional about adding some pops around Miles Garrett they brought in Dalvin Tomlinson Maybe you remember him from. Uh, I think he was on the giants, I'm not mistaken he was. He was, he was one of our guys, uh, one of our guys. And then he went to minnesota for a little while and then to cleveland got shelby harris. He came over from denver. Uh, he wasn't a big sack guy, but pressures and rushes and tackles, it's kind of what Shelby Harris did best and that's good for what the Browns are trying to accomplish. I know they had Cesario Smith. Stud came from Green Bay. I mean, he was a stud for them. I'm surprised they let him out of the building, but he was a stud for them and the Browns did not. Going to be incredible. So nice pick by you, herb, as the third D-line team there.

Speaker 1:

Mine's with the Eagles For the first time they had some questions on the D-line. I always thought the O-line was better than the D-line anyways. But I think we should be watching out for Jalen Carter. I think this might be a year that he may even come back stronger than he did last year, he year that he may even you know, come back strongly. He did last year. He came out, he came out hot and then kind of just cooled off the second part of the season. So I'm not, but he still had a fantastic uh grade as a a dominant d-line guy. Uh, bright suckers back there as well um, jordan davis and nolan smith he's a name that you hear about every time somebody's analyzing the Eagles defense. So these guys are good, they're stable, they're solid and they're young, so they're just getting better.

Speaker 1:

I could have picked the Lions. I had them at four. Hayden Hutchinson, gold, blue, that's my boy. But you know there's some things around him that I wasn't too sure about. Like DJ Reader, I think he's still hurt right now and they brought him in to try to help Marcus Davenport. He did good on the Saints, and by good I mean he was confident, he had some flashes, but they brought him in to try to kind of turn things around. So I'm not quite sure that's going to help Hutchinson on both sides, but we'll see what happens. But on both sides, but we'll see what happens. But on the D-line side, really good stuff. I'm pretty excited about seeing what they do, especially in the NFC East.

Speaker 1:

Big Mike says any fan that would rather beat your rival instead of winning a championship is 10,000% little brother energy. What is this about? What are you talking about you talking about me. This is my mission. Oh man, I want to win a championship, obviously, especially after last year. I want to win it again to show that we are uh, you know that we're still viable in this playoff race. So I'm not trying to just beat OSU and not win a championship, that's more of an OSU thing. I think I'm not down with that one. I want to win the whole thing again. But that's just me though. Okay, I'm like what Marks for an Auburn? Oh man, all right Eagles, question marks, and no, kelsey made me pause. Yeah, I've been saying that for several weeks now.

Speaker 1:

I'm like how do you replace him? He's been so solid and so stellar for so long. I can't recall anybody saying a bad thing about him for his entire career. I don't mean personality and character-wise, I'm just talking about on the field stuff. I haven't heard anybody say anything about him bad at all as far as his play, nothing. He's been probably, would you say one of the best centers of all time. Would you say, let you guys decide that one, jason Kelsey, one of the best centers of all time. He was definitely one of the best for years and years in this league. That's that I will say, uh, maybe not number one, but got to be top three for quite a while. I I'm kind of with you, mike, I'm probably gonna put him up there. I mean, he was stellar production wise, I mean as consistent as you can get. So to replace him, it's like you can't just throw anybody in. I don't care if it's an understudy who's been sitting here watching him and holding the clipboard and learning from him all these years that he was starting. You can't just put him in there and think he's going to be kelsey. So I'm with her.

Speaker 1:

I have some questions about whether they'd be able to replace them. The the all of analysis and the predictions they're super, super positive. They're very positive that the Eagles have more than capable talent on their O-line to kind of keep it going. I like Jordan a lot. I think Cam Juergens might be the next man up as a center. I think he could be able to hold that job down. Landon Dickinson is a name that you don't want to try to. You know, you don't want to take for granted. He's really good and solid at what he does. And of course, lane Johnson is still there on the right side. I mean they got an incredible O-line, so that's not really a question, but we'll see. But the D-line line, so that's not really a question, but we'll see what the d line I think is where some of the challenges are.

Speaker 1:

You got guys that you know besides bryce huff and jalen carter. You may not know a lot of these guys it's not that you got to be famous or anything, but you don't. You don't know a whole lot about what they're going to do in these situations. They're not, they don't have a whole lot of in-game experience. But but we'll see how that goes. Good morning, sir.

Speaker 1:

This is a comment from Raj, one half of the Herb and Raj podcast. They've been mainstays on that Monday thing since we started doing this for the most part, and they have an incredible podcast called the Herb and Raj podcast, appley. Every Tuesday night at 8 pm on Central Time. They're rocking football talk like nobody can out there. College pro. They're doing it all. These guys are fantastic at what they do. So good evening, sir. Roll Tide, all right, no, no, this is good.

Speaker 1:

I think your answers are exactly the same thing. This is the d-line is like say the truth to be honest, all three, my top three teams jets, niners and eagles. I probably can do an o-line on them and probably have them almost in the same place. Maybe the jets won't be at number one. Might dip them down a little bit on the o-line side. Not quite sure I believe in them that much, them, and probably have them almost in the same place. Maybe the Jets won't be at number one. Might dip them down a little bit on the O-line side. Not quite sure I believe in them that much. But yeah, we're doing defense, so you're all good.

Speaker 1:

Hey, lady, thanks for joining us. We appreciate you so much. Lady's been a big supporter of our show and of course also our wrestling show at 9 o'clock, so love to have you on. And thanks for chiming in on all of the football related topics. You missed college, so wish you were there for that part, but glad you're here to join us today.

Speaker 1:

All right, so next up, I want to get into a little bit of the question we were asking about some of the predictions we had for college football. Now, this is a tough one because and this is tough for me, because the season just the season hasn't even started yet. People are talking about where somebody's going to be at, who's going to win what? Blah, blah, blah, blah blah. It's tough because you can't tell. All you can do is just really guess. But I had some poll questions this week regarding Texas and Oklahoma and Oregon and Washington, and they're all coming into new conferences this year.

Speaker 1:

Regarding Texas and Oklahoma and Oregon and Washington and they're all coming into new conferences this year, I was wondering what the predictions were going to be for each of these four teams and I want to see what we had. From the Herb and Raj podcast, I know they answered a few of those questions for us, so let's see where we got some of their responses. All right, so let's see where we got some of the responses. All right. So on this one, kirby and Raj have Texas going easily 11-1, no worse than 10-2. All right.

Speaker 1:

So the biggest games, I think on their schedule, because their schedule is probably one of the easiest ones going right now and they have Texas. Sorry, texas has Georgia, oklahoma and Michigan, not being a homer, but in my humble opinion, these three games are not going to be gimmies. Texas is going to have to work for these. They're going to feel the heat from the defenses in all three of these teams Michigan, georgia and Oklahoma. They're going to feel the heat from the defenses in all three of these teams. On all three of these teams Michigan, georgia and Oklahoma they're going to feel the heat. Quinn Ewards is going to have to perform in this situation and if he doesn't have his two running backs and they're short a man and they're struggling he's going to be challenging games for them. I forgot where they are in the schedule, but they're going to have some challenges facing off against them. I've got Texas going 10-2, 9-3 at the very worst. I think Michigan has a chance to beat them, but I'm doing that based on who's on the roster and not so much anything I can see, because they haven't played the games yet. So this is all just predicting, all right.

Speaker 1:

So Oklahoma Urban Lodge podcast has eight and four or seven and five. Our guy Brian he's a big Oklahoma fan. He'll be jumping in on the show from time to time to kind of chop it up or some college football talk with us. He has them in nine and three. Of course he's Oklahoma fan, so he already hates all of that stuff. So that's just. That's just. I expected that. At the same time, I think that his nine and three prediction is pretty accurate. You're going to be playing Texas, missouri and Bama. There's a good chance, a really good chance, that Oklahoma doesn't beat either one of these three teams. So this makes sense right here. Jackson Arnold is predicted to be their starting QB. If he's as elite as they say he is, nine wins might be a certainty for them. So that's better than what it could be, better than what some of you predicted for the Oklahoma team. So that's totally fair. Everyone watch podcast.

Speaker 1:

Has Oregon winning the Big Ten? Okay, that's been said quite a bit. I'm not going to say they didn't say Michigan is going to win the Big Ten. I know better. I just want them in the playoffs at this point. But Oregon or OSU have been the two that have been predicted to win the Big Ten. Fair enough, fair enough. I have Oregon going 11-1. Are they playing OSU and Michigan and OSU and Michigan? Those are two teams that it's not totally clear that they're going to definitively beat both of these teams. I think we'll see it.

Speaker 1:

Talent-wise, they got it going on. They got a very efficient offense. Can Gabriel do what Bo Nix was doing on a successful level getting the ball out of his hands, making smart decisions, moving his feet when he had to staying in the pocket when he was wise. I think that's going to be something we got to see from Gabriel. Ask yourself, did you see that when he was at Notre Dame? And ask yourself that question. There they also got a Texas A&M transfer. That is a stud at wide receiver, already being considered elite, hasn't played a game yet. It's a possibility he might even be better than Troy Franklin, which is high praise. So Gabriel has somebody to help him out back there. So Oregon could be pretty tough. We're going 11-1. On that one I am going to hesitate to give them the Big Ten, but we'll see.

Speaker 1:

All right, so Washington was our fourth team. Herb and Rod's podcast has Washington going 7-5 or 8-4, but they're going to have a season that's going to be a struggle, is what they're saying. I got Washington at about 6-6. I think I may regret that decision. They may want to bump them up a little bit because, even though they lost a lot this year and lost their head coach and they kind of almost started from scratch in some areas, I think that they're a lot better than what you know. People are saying. Not all their production is gone, but a good bit of it is gone. That's just being fair, but I think they may have a chance to put up a fight and and win some tough games. So we'll see how that looks.

Speaker 1:

My three teams are the best D line. Yeah, that's what we did. So your guys, you had the Jets, the Niners and the Browns and I was the best D-line, without question. All right, six and six is fair for Washington. Yeah, I could be wrong. More than likely. In about two weeks I'll probably change my mind, but that's going to be fun about our college football talks. Man, I'm excited about that because I'm probably going to change my mind a whole bunch of times. It's not going to be the first time.

Speaker 1:

I asked also some more poll questions who's your surprise AFC team, your surprise NFC team? Well, this was a tough one. Shoot, let me get some water. I'm doing most of the talking today, so don't drive All right. Surprise team in the AFC. So let's start there Now.

Speaker 1:

The temptation for me to go chalk in the AFC and NFC is a really, really strong temptation. I mean, let's be honest, everybody, almost everything, has stayed the same. Honest, everybody, almost everything has stayed the same. And all the teams that you will call contenders and automatically putting them in the playoffs. Whether it be the Eagles or Cowboys, or the Niners, the Chiefs, the Dolphins, not a whole lot has changed from last year. Everything is pretty much the same as it was last year, with a few notable exceptions. For example, philly got Saquon Barkley now, so their running game is going to be a lot more powered. The Saints got Chase Young. I mean, they squeaked out you, you know, being at a chance to get the division last year, nfc south. Nobody seemed to want it to win it last year and chase young is already going to be joining an elite defense already, so they're going to be better just because he's there. Uh, atlanta got matt judon and justin simmons. I still don't know how they pulled it off, but they're going to be better than they were last year, without question.

Speaker 1:

I mean having Kirk Cousins and the reliability at that position and we know that his time in Minnesota he was fantastic in the regular season, but when the spotlight got hot in primetime, in primetime games and in postseasons he seemed to wilt under the heat. So we'll see that happens in Atlanta. But they have a stud behind him in Michael Penance, who they seem to be pretty high on. They sat him for most of the preseason. So they're very, very, very, very high on him, clearly. And then, of course, on the AFC side, baltimore got Derrick Henry from the Titans, who's a stud.

Speaker 1:

I mean, you notice, 6'5" or 6'4", 270-something pounds. I mean you don't want to try to tackle that dude, and most of the guys made a whole bunch of business decisions in the NFL last year and didn't want to tackle him. So most of the big, the frontrun, if you will, nothing has changed with their teams for the most part. So if we're talking about surprises, we got to go off of that page and go somewhere else and we can do that all right. So for me, my surprise afc team. You know this is going to be a tough one for me.

Speaker 1:

Now I want to answer his question, okay, Herbert, saying do the Bengals count? I'm going to say no, only because people are already expecting them to compete. I mean, I just did a prediction show and I had the Bengals going deep into the playoffs. So it's like that's not something that is a stretch for most people. Most people already are thinking that already that's what's going to happen. So I guess it's not really that much of a stretch. But your other prediction. Yeah, that potentially could be that. I mean, people got the Colts in the playoffs as well, even if Richardson wasn't there. They had him in the playoffs last year too, but that was highly dependent on Richardson being healthy and everything. But they still did that. Still made the playoffs even without him. They had Gardner Minshew, which is like surprising all by itself. No offense to him, but it's like he took them to the playoffs.

Speaker 1:

So they must have talent on that squad and they most definitely do. Check out their roster, you can see it. They got talent on defense and they always seem to do that. It could be better, but they have a very talented defense. They got DeForest Buckner, who you know from the Niners, julian Blackman, who's moved around the league a little bit, kenny Moore the second he's been the mainstay there for a while Jalen Jones and Zaire Franklin. I mean they got talent on there, guys that you know, that you've seen them play. So I'm not sure these guys are surprised either.

Speaker 1:

I'm going to go ahead and go with the Pittsburgh Steelers. I think this is going to be a surprise. I'm curious to see how Russ and Mike Tomlin work together. I could imagine it's going to be great. I think Tomlin is a great coach. I think Russ is willing to be coached. I don't see anything historically. That said he's not and he's had a couple of great coaches, if you want to include Peyton. The coach before him was not so great, but I think they're going to be competitive.

Speaker 1:

I think the Stittles are that team that kind of got a chip on their shoulder because nobody's saying that they're going to win the division and go deep in the playoffs. Nobody's seeing that. They're kind of like they're never going to have a strong defense but nobody's giving them credit to be anything more than that. But this roster has a good mix of talent. They got youth who got potential and that P word can be good or bad, depends on how you want to use it. But will that locker room follow Russ and kind of get out there and quote-unquote cook with him as a signal caller? We'll see Not hearing great things about Justin Fields, so it's not looking great. That could be pretty bad going down the line.

Speaker 1:

But I'm going to give the Pittsburgh Steelers my surprise AFC pick. I think they're going to do a lot better than what's predicted. I've seen some numbers but I won't quote those this week. Maybe next week we'll touch that or the week after, but I'm going to get my Pittsburgh Sittles going to be my surprise AFC team for the NFC. Who you got guys, all right.

Speaker 1:

Falcons and the Bears I wouldn't tackle Derek Henry on a video game. I know that's right, fam, I wouldn't even dream of it. All right. So you got the Falcons and the Bears. I like these and these are really hard for me to pick because I don't know which one to pick, falcons or the Bears. You picked the Falcons first. I'm going to probably go ahead and I'm inclined to go with the Falcons too, uh, but since you already got them, I'm gonna go ahead and go to tina we've been talking about on a couple of shows. I'm going with the bears. I mean honestly, the only question I have about the bears is on the defensive side. Jalen johnson is definitely their guy at corner. I like him. I think he should hang out there. Hopefully he'll stay. Tremaine Edmonds from Buffalo that's going to be an underrated move on the defensive side. Tj Edwards from Pittsburgh Sorry, from Philadelphia. That's going to be another underrated move.

Speaker 1:

That they got Montez Sweat from the Commanders. He's always been really good. That was a tough decision for the Commanders to let him go. It was all financially related because they didn't want to do that. But on the offensive side they got DJ Moe, who came back over another year again. Wilma Dunza from Washington, keenan Allen from the Chargers they got some. Cole Kermes has been solid at the tight end over there and DeAndre Swift. They got him and Khalil Herbert in the backfield If they're healthy. That should be a nice running back combo if they're healthy. But Caleb Williams has been looking pretty good. I know it's just preseason, but if he plays anything close to competent, he got talent back to the back of him up. He got guys that can catch the ball, that got breakaway speed, that can to a degree get 50-50 balls, which is good the way they play. Guys that can get yards after the catch.

Speaker 1:

I think the Bears are going to be my surprise team. I have no idea what they're going to do, but I'm going to give them and I have done this on my prediction shows, other prediction shows. I'm giving them not only the surprise NFC team, but also I see them in the playoffs this season. They're going to get knocked out in the first round. I see them in the playoffs as a matter of fact and that was a slippery stroke I had another team that I wasn't sure if they were to be the one to knock the Bears out. There's still a chance that can happen. I reserve the right to change my mind on that one as well. All right, so what we got here is a hot take. Uh-oh, pennix finishes the year at quarterback, not Cousins. That is a hot take, man. I of the year at quarterback not Cousins that is a hot take, man. I love it.

Speaker 1:

Do we get into our SWX Excited about this one? These teams are kind of run of the mill middle of the road SWX. For those of you guys that are watching us for the first time don't know what we're talking about, why we abbreviate and stuff. All right, swx stands for strength, weakness and X factor Strength, weakness and X factor. We've been breaking down the NFL for the past several weeks and we're almost I think we're about two or three weeks away from finishing this up, and then we're going with the heavy NFL and college football predictions every week. So we're going to be going hard in the next two weeks or so. But our four teams that we're going to be breaking down for our SWX Challenge this week the Cleveland Browns, the Arizona Cardinals, the Los Angeles Chargers and the Tennessee Titans. All right, the Browns, the Cardinals, the Chargers and the Titans.

Speaker 1:

Let's see what Herb got out here for us today. All right, so we're starting off with Cleveland. Herb has the Cleveland defense as the strength. Great minds think alike. Maybe kind of hard to dispute that. There isn't really a weak spot on the entire defense. Miles Garrett leads the charge. 15 sacks, super high, nearly perfect pass rush grade, defensive grade.

Speaker 1:

You got Cesaria Smith, like I said, from the Packers. The Packers let him out of the building. I still don't get that that man. He saved a day on that defense so many times I can't even count, so it really makes no sense to me. But he's with Cleveland now. They made him a whole lot stronger. He's just 31 years old, so he is going to definitely be one of the best pass rushers or edge rushers in the league this year. The Cleveland their strengths are definitely going to be their defense, without question. All right, so his weakness is going to be them playing on the road. Their defense doesn't travel well.

Speaker 1:

Okay, what I got is their receiver depth. Amari Cooper is 30 years old. When the season starts, they brought in Jerry Judy. Kind of all depends on how you feel about him. Do you think he was great coming out of college and joining the Denver Broncos? I didn't really have that feeling about him. He has a chance to not be a disappointment like he was last year. He has a chance to not be a disappointment like he was last year. I mean first round pick and having injuries and inconsistency he had with the three seasons he was in Denver. He has a lot to battle through. I think there's a problem back there. Elijah Moore is a guy that they're waiting for him to kind of come up and it hasn't happened yet. So I think this could be a big problem for them.

Speaker 1:

I doubt very highly that the issues with Deshaun Watson are over with. Physically it looks like Herb has the X factor. Being Deshaun Watson Makes a lot of sense. Who do? I got Mine's the same thing. Man, herb. We think alike man. It's scary but I like it. So he's both of our X factors. So that means, if he's healthy, if he's throwing a ball the way we expect that he should be able to do, after how many years of rest? Two or three years, this is the longest lunch break in school history. So if he is able to function on any level competently, this team is going to go a lot of places. They can't go get Joe Flacco anymore because he's on a different team now, so they're going to need these guys to step up. So Watson is definitely one of those names. All right.

Speaker 1:

Next up, we got Arizona. All right, herb's Arizona strength is the running game. James Conner has been a beast plus. Kyler adds to that. Can't dispute that. All right. So I like James Conner Loved him in Pittsburgh, but love him here as well. I love Trey Benson behind him. I think he's one of the top guys I had running back-wise coming out of the draft. So I'm excited about that. Amazing how nobody's talking about Marvin Harrison Jr at all, but I guess that's another topic altogether. But you got them as your run game is your strength. I have same thing. I didn't even see it. James Conner has an 88.4 rushing grade. That's probably the biggest reason why You're going to be a threat, like you said, with Kyla and with Trey Benson back there. I like it. Okay, cool, we're doing the same things again.

Speaker 1:

Arizona weakness what do we got for it? All right, run defense One of the worst. I just got the defense period, lowest graded defense in the entire nfl since. Uh, you know, and jonathan gannon's gonna be you know, you know the head coach, and they struggled in a run. They struggled in the past game, they struggled period. Uh, they had three defensive players that were like well below par, well below average. So this is gonna a problem. I think we're both on the same page. You got the one defense, but I got the defense as a whole.

Speaker 1:

X factor wise team morale Okay, you pull that one out, brother. Team morale they don't like the owner or the facilities. And will that carry over to the field? It's a good question, man, I don't see how that stuff doesn't. We can say be professional and do your job and that kind of stuff. It's easy to say that you know what I'm saying, but those things impact people and it impacts you mentally and emotionally. So if you don't like ownership and you've got really good reasons for feeling that way and somebody who's coming in and giving you pep talks and talking to you and you know that you don't like them, it translates the facilities, them, it. It translates, uh, the facilities. I don't know if you mean a turf slash grass or where they work out. I'm not sure where you're going with that one, but they're having problems with that. It affects their ability to perform. So I'm definitely with you on that one.

Speaker 1:

My x factor is going to be uh, one of the old line guys, paris johnson j Jr. He had a decent rookie season, but they're relying a lot on him protecting Kyler. So if he does that, it's going to help Kyler stay out of trouble and kind of stay healthy. So that's going to be a good thing too. Let's see what else we got here. Alright, so we got the Chargers up. Next, we're moving pretty good here, all right.

Speaker 1:

So the charger strength is justin herbert tools to be elite. Can he finally get there? Yeah, I I wonder about that myself. Shano said washington is dead weakness. I I can't fault you for that man. You're probably spying about that, because this is not a good situation. This man had almost three years off and he doesn't look any better throwing the ball than he has. Maybe there's something wrong that he hasn't been diagnosed, because he shouldn't look that bad after all this time. But as far as strengths go, herb got Justin Herbert. I have their. Okay, I'm missing my own word. All right, edge rusher. That's what I have. I feel like you know little Mac, even though he's 32 years old, he had one of his best seasons he had in like three years. So he looked fantastic. Career high, 18 sacks last season, so that's good, but beyond that, that's where the problem is.

Speaker 1:

Joey Bosa is hurt a lot. I mean I have a Joey Bosa watch. I mean everybody knows that the Chargers are my second NFL team, my favorite, and I'm on a Joey Bosa watch every time the season starts because he gets hurt every single year. It's like how is this possible? He's on the field, highly productive Stacks, qb pressures. I mean he's in there, he's a stat monster, he's filling up the stat machine, but he gets hurt, though, and then what happens? That's it. So they got some guys behind him. We'll see how that looks, but you're going to have to put a whole bunch of guys behind him because Boca gets hurt a lot. So that's going to be where I have the weakness. Well, yeah, the weakness, no the strength, sorry, all right. So for Herb, the weakness is skill positions, wide receiver and running back. Lost a lot but have not recovered Facts.

Speaker 1:

I got wide receiver. I wasn't a big fan of Mike Williams. The man had all the potential and opportunity in the world to do some things and he could never put it together. I mean, you got guys like Phillip Rivers throwing you the ball and you can't get that together. No, and the Chargers had probably one of the worst cap situations in football so they had to kind of, uh, let go a lot of the guys like a kenan allen, who we aforementioned he's on chicago bears now and mike williams going to the jets. So they had to cut a lot of guys. If it wasn't for the cap, they probably would have kept both of them. That's how much wide receiver was a need. So I got that.

Speaker 1:

The at the biggest weakness, quentin Johnston. His name keeps popping up. We're trying to figure out are you here to play? What's going on? I mean, I see some challenges when he was in college, but I don't know what's going on with him. I don't know if it's a head thing or what, but hardball's not going to have it. He's dropping passes and he's struggling big time. So they brought some guys in to try to help out with that. Cornelius Johnson, who came over from Michigan, go blue. Brendan Rice, who, of course, that is Rice's last name, as in Jerry Rice. Brendan Rice is his son and Lab McConkie came in. So they're trying to get some wide receiver help there. So hopefully this helps out to get some playmakers out there for Justin Herbert to throw to. So we'll see if that works out.

Speaker 1:

Herb's expected is hardball and a change in philosophy and style value in the run game more. I could see that. I mean that makes sense. I mean running back wise. I think they took care of that. Health going to play a part, but I think they took care of that. He'll play a part, but I think they took care of that by bringing in Gus Edwards and JK Dobbins. I mean they went to the Ravens and said you know what? I mean Jim just called his brother on the phone and said you know what? You got two running backs. Can I have them? He said yeah and gave them both of the Ravens' running backs. I don't know how he pulled that one off, but it was majestic. My expect is going to be quentin johnson, though still talking about him.

Speaker 1:

He has to catch the passes because he's been dropping those a lot. It's been. People are saying, oh, it's not a big deal, but it is because it's happening in in bad spots. So it's definitely an issue. Uh, to some degree he's not separating from the defense. Uh, the passing attack is a big deal in Los Angeles and you've got to throw that up. And Quentin Johnson is one of the guys. If he's playing well, it's going to help everybody else. So I would only hope that they get that resolved. But that's kind of where we are right now.

Speaker 1:

All right, so for Tennessee, the strength that we got he said man, I don't know O-line, if all the things work out. The strength that we got, he said man, I don't know O-line, if all the things work out. I got wide receiver. They added Calvin Whitley and Tyler Boyle, who I think both are pretty highly of With D-hop it's going to be a formidable wide receiver room.

Speaker 1:

There's some guys back there like Nick Westbrook and Traylon Burks. These guys they've been stable and steady and they're definitely good at being wide receiver. Two, wide receiver three that's what they need right now with D-Hop there and Ridley and Boyd. So they're giving Levin some weapons. There's going to be a strength in this case. There's not a whole lot of strength to speak of, so it's going to be a short conversation, but that's going to be a strength there, all right.

Speaker 1:

So let's see what Herb has got going on here. So weakness is going to be injuries. Already got two of the top three wide receivers. Okay, who's Herb? Some of these guys are healthy, okay. Plus, I'm honestly not sure about the skill group in general.

Speaker 1:

Big names, but will they produce? Yeah, there's not a whole lot of names to speak of beside the ones I just named. Uh, d hop is back there, taliboy coming over from cincinnati, or calvin really coming over from jacksonville. Beside that, everybody else are kind of just uh well, nick westbrook, a kind. He's been there for a while. He's always been a backup, but you know he helps. He helps on this team.

Speaker 1:

They brought in Tony Pollard and Ty J Spears. I don't know whether that's going to be deal breakers for them. On the offensive side. The wide receiver's room is strong. Everything else on the offensive side is probably a little bit suspect. So I'm not quite sure.

Speaker 1:

You got X Factor. You got Will Levis. That's good man. I got Will Levis too. I mean, the entire fate kind of rests on his shoulders, man. I know he's a second-year quarterback, but it's really on him. He threw some flashes. He had an awesome game against Atlanta. Not saying much when he got Desmond Ridd on the other side, but he had four touchdowns in that game, 238 yards. He sliced them up, did fantastic against Miami. I'm sure Raj remembers that game, week 14. But beside that it's kind of been no real big-time throws a lot of turnovers with the ball. It's possible that Tennessee can compete in the South, but it's never going to be a big part of whether that's going to happen or not, whether that's going to work out to their advantage. So we'll see how that goes. We both got it. We'll never say the X factor and we'll run through some of the rest of our comments before we shut down the show. All right, let's see what we got going on, all right.

Speaker 1:

So Herb and Rod says we love Judy at Bama but didn't like the drops or the demeanor in Denver. Needed a fresh start. It's on him, though. Yep, when he came out. It was a part of it. It was Judy versus CeeDee Lamb, and I picked Lamb over Judy. I thought he was the better wide receiver and they were trying to fillet me out here in these streets. I don't think I had hardly nobody on my side saying Lamb was the better wide receiver. I feel vindicated today.

Speaker 1:

So Ferguson NFL asks every team to treasure facilities and coach and all that. That's where that came from. Okay, guess whose mom is in the house? My mom. Good job, thank you, mom, appreciate you so much. All right, he said man, he was a wasted pick. Who was that? Was that Judy or was that Watson? Clarify that for me, shane, so I know who we're talking about. Who's the way to pick there? All right, so hervin boss has almost went wide receiver for the titans, but age and injuries made me pause. And well, you should have man. It's one of the teams used to watch man. But your guys, that team has changed, especially with d henry gone. Now I'm not sure what's going to happen. And you said boyd and hopkins are both hurt. Wow, I guess that's factor as well.

Speaker 1:

I thought that was their strength. I mean, that was the, the only strength that they had on this entire team. I hope there's no tennessee titans fans that are offended by that. I. I apologize, but that was their strength on this team. They didn't have anything else. Their running game wasn't their strength, their pass rushes their strength. Their cornerbacks and secondaries not their strength. This is all that they had. And now they're hurt If they're not ready for week one. It's going to be a nightmare scenario in Tennessee.

Speaker 1:

But thank you everybody for continuing to ride with us as we go through this transition in our show. It's been so much fun. I miss all the guys being here with me, but they're on assignment. But they're still chiming in and helping out and we'll be seeing them next week and jumping in here live again with some more football talk. We got a big slate of football on tap for next Thursday.
