Speaker 1:Weather-wise, we're a little bit behind schedule in our episodes being sent out to you guys, but thank you for your patience. Thank you for the love that you've been showing us and all the shows on our brand and especially all of the comments about the episodes that you've been able to listen and watch, listen to and watch Just really appreciate it. It's been a blessing to be able to send these shout outs to you guys and it sounds as though they're making an impact where you are on a personal and spiritual level. So that's our goal, that's what we want. We understand that a better you makes a better world. So that's our goal, that's what we want. We understand that a better you makes a better world, so we're excited about that. I'm going to talk to you guys about something I think is really it's a very. It's a simple concept, but I feel as though we don't. We make it complex when it really isn't. As a matter of fact, we complicate it mainly because of our own desires, inclinations and, most especially, our emotions.
Speaker 1:Here's a question for you guys what do you do when things start to get boring? What do you personally do when things start to get boring boring as a kid? I grew up in the inner city. We didn't have a lot of the things that children these days may have access to. In some cases it's even worse than what I grew up having. We didn't have a lot of baseball fields and football fields. We had to be innovative in how we had athletics and recreation. But what I did as a kid is I searched for excitement. I chased the thrills. That may be something that you can relate to. If something was boring, it was almost like being in a prison. It could be kind of excruciating for a kid to be in a place where you're bored and you're craving excitement. Usually what happens, often in a negative way, is that something that's exciting? It's not good for us. We'll chase it, not really thinking about the other end of that path.
Speaker 1:I want to talk to you guys today about mastering the mundane. It's a concept that I learned through some of my business travels and I think it's really appropriate for today's times, people who are a leader like myself, people who are in a place where they lead others, where they mentor others, where they coach others or they're just an example or role model to others. Our leadership is predicated on the understanding that in the course of our personal growth and personal development, we're going to do things that are considered mundane. One thing that people never notice is the power of consistency in their life. They're always looking for the new high, and it's scary because it's an emotional issue and it's one that many people, particularly leaders, don't deal with.
Speaker 1:Let's think about David for a second David from the Bible. Not David from down the street, but David from the Bible. He was known to be arguably the greatest king in biblical history, but what he was also known to be was one of the most faithful shepherds that we've ever seen, noted in scripture. But his shepherding work was mundane. Yes, there were accounts of him killing the lion and the bears and the wolves, protecting the sheep, which represented commerce in his family household, in his family and financial dynamic. Those sheep represented money. They represented the ability to feed their household. So the sheep were important. It was just as important as a dollar bill. But when we hear about the lions and the bears and the wolves we almost glamorize it as if that was the crust of his job. But David Shepard's work was mundane. The majority of his work was mundane of his job. But David's shepherding work was mundane. The majority of his work was mundane. It was quiet, there were no adversaries. Every single day it was just making sure the sheep were fed and maybe sitting on a rock or sitting in a field somewhere and just watching and waiting.
Speaker 1:People chased the excitement and chase the thrill. But what happens in the uneventful days? So we're taught and encouraged to major in the radiant matters of life, but we don't. We minor in them and we should be majoring in those. See, the trouble really comes to us in those quiet, uneventful times where nothing seems to be going on. That's when we lose our grip, that's when we fall short of the mark, that's when we get engulfed in temptations because we're searching for excitement, we're chasing the thrill.
Speaker 1:We couldn't see David in his entire assignment. We got little glimpses of it. We know his family didn't pay him much mind. We knew that. We knew that the Lord's eyes were on him all the time and the Lord considered him a man after his own heart. First, samuel 13 and 14 gets into that he was telling the prophet. Samuel was telling Saul, the king at the time your kingdom will not endure. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people. Because you have not kept the Lord's commands. Excuse me, the Lord was looking for a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people. Because you have not kept the Lord's commands. Excuse me. The Lord was looking for a man through his own heart. Not the one that did the best work, not the one that was the most exciting, not the one that had the most challenges in life. He wanted a man after his own heart. That's what God was looking for in David. That's what God was looking for in you. See's what God was looking for in you See, david took diligent care of the family business, even though he was disgraced by his relatives.
Speaker 1:He was even seen as less than even, in some cases, invisible, not even relevant on the family tree. But David did something that many of us won't do when we're being disgraced and being disparaged by people. We're not in a place where we think we should be seated in people's minds, in people's ministries, in people's lives, in people's family dynamic. What David did was against the grain for most of us. He took diligent care of the family business. How easy it would have been for him to choose what his brothers wanted and try to chase kingship and chase status socially. He did the grunt work, he did the boring stuff and he never complained. We don't know what David thought, but he never complained. He never tried to rebel against what his assignment was. He stayed faithful, he stayed quiet, he did what he was supposed to do and in return he was blessed above measure. In return, he was blessed beyond even his own imagination, blessed beyond what his family thought he was worth. All because he mastered the mundane.
Speaker 1:There's power in the consistency of life, in the disciplines, in life. As leaders we need to think about that kind of stuff because those are the things that develop us. The mundane has. Let me say this the mundane has a great ability to build a better you, and the reason why that happens is because the mundane keeps the emotions out of it. Most of the things mundane that we do in life, we probably can almost do it blind, instinctively able to do it, but the problem is the heart posture in why we do it. I know folks that have a mundane job, a mundane family life, but they complain about it, their heart's unright regarding it, and that kind of results in a different outcome. That perhaps what they may want.
Speaker 1:Excuse me, the point I'm trying to make here is that we need to learn how to master the mundane. Embrace it. Embrace the things that are boring that you do. Embrace them. Let's strive for excellence. That's something that we don't do in a lot of areas of our life. We're looking for good enough or we're looking for just fine, but I believe God is calling for somebody after his own heart who strives for excellence.
Speaker 1:What David did in that field, where nobody was watching, taking care of them sheep who never gave him any kind of praise for it, and sheep never said thank you, never gave him a pat on the back, thanks for taking care of us and keeping us from being destroyed and devoured. He never did that. He just kept on doing the work with diligence, with appreciation. He served faithfully. He did it quietly, without making a big noise, without trying to get attention on himself. He was mastering the mundane.
Speaker 1:I challenge you guys as you listen to this episode and beyond. Wherever your day is going to take you today and your week's going to take you and your month's going to take you and a year's going to take you, I challenge you to master the mundane the things that you do that you think are boring. Look at them differently today. How can I do this better? How can I do this with more excellence, with more quality? How can I do this better? How can I do this with more excellence, with more quality? What would God think about what I do, how I serve, how I lead, how I function, the work that I put my hands forth to do? Would he be pleased with how it looks? Is my heart posture right? Let's think about those things as we move forward.
Speaker 1:Hope you enjoyed the episode. I hope it was a blessing to you. If you have any questions, by all means shoot some comments, whether you see this episode or on social media. Love to hear back from you on that and, of course, have a fantastic day. Master the mundane. It's in you. Go do it. Thank you.
