Ever wondered why some people are more concerned with appearances rather than depth? On this episode of the All Purpose Pod, we draw from the quirky nostalgia of the classic TV show "Land of the Lost" to explore the concept of "surface dwellers." Often seen as a derogatory term in the series, we translate this idea into today’s context by examining those who prioritize image over substance. We invite you to consider if you or those around you fall into this category and how it might be affecting your life and relationships.

Our discussion centers on recognizing and navigating relationships with surface dwellers—people who prioritize superficiality over depth in life. We explore how these relationships and higher pressures can hinder our personal growth, emphasizing the need for reflection and resilience amidst trials.

• Concept introduced: surface dwellers and their characteristics
• Impacts of surface dwellers on personal growth and relationships
• Metallurgy metaphor: refining gold and silver through heat
• Importance of enduring trials for growth and clarity
• Questions posed to listeners about personal impurities and growth
• Encouragement toward engaging in deeper life discussions and connections

It means a lot to us, keeps us uh on our toes and making sure we're heading in the right direction, talking about relevant stuff that matters to you. You know this is a funny topic, but I laugh because I think it's funny to me anyways.

Speaker 1:

But there's an old show I'm about to date myself real big right now. It is a show called the Land of the Lost. I ain't gonna tell you what the year was. I'll let you go and dig it up in Google. Google it, google the Land of the Lost. When you see it, you're gonna year was. I let you go and dig it up in Google, google it, google the land of the lost. When you see it, you're going to laugh like this was TV. Yeah, this was children's television. It was what it was back then. I couldn't dare watch it now, but it was what it was back then. But during this TV show for children, the land of the lost, they were these extraterrestrial creatures who would kind of have this war against the humans and it was called the humans, but by a term called the surface dwellers. The term was considered derogatory. It wasn't a term of endearment, it wasn't a compliment, but they were called the surface dwellers and I don't know why. I even thought about that, but it just made sense based on the context of this episode today.

Speaker 1:

But what is a surface dweller? Actually, if you define it, it's not very endearing there either. Here's the actual official definition. It's a fake or shallow person, someone concerned with their image or material things, someone concerned with their image or material things. They're wanderers. They can't be trusted, they're kind of flighty. Or even a term for a business owner not committed to building a business, which I thought was very, very strange. I never saw that definition before. But a business owner not committed to building a business? They're considered a service dweller, wow, okay.

Speaker 1:

Well, I think we should beware of the surface dwellers in our life. I know that, and we kind of sometimes we fancy ourselves as being deep, we fancy ourselves as being people who have accomplished some things and we feel like we have risen above certain areas or certain stations in life. I'm going to let you deal with that one on your own, but we should beware of the surface dwellers. Now, you can't beware of something that we can't recognize, of the surface dwellers. Now, you can't beware of something that we can't recognize. So we're going to get into that a little bit, about what that means, what it looks like, and have you kind of begin to start addressing that in your own individual places and spaces.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so, generally speaking, a surface dweller is someone who is averse to the deep thing. Now, if you are a surface dweller, after you hear your definitions, there's room for growth here. This is not the end of the world. You can change these behaviors. But it's really good and healthy to identify where there's some problems so you can address it.

Speaker 1:

But surface dwellers, generally speaking, are averse to the deep things in life. But even worse than that, when I say deep things, I mean disciplines, standards, morals, the willingness to adjust, to change and grow personally, emotionally, spiritually, those kind of things. But even worse than that, they're not only averse to the deep things, but they're also averse to you. If you're friends with them, if you're associated or connected with them, they're averse to you doing it as well. So they don't just hold themselves back, they hold you back as well. So agreement with them usually means you won't be permitted or encouraged to do those things either those deep things in life that we need to to grow ourselves those things, either those deep things in life that we need to grow ourselves.

Speaker 1:

If you ever ask yourself why you don't seem to be able to get into areas that require deeper disciplines earlier prayer times, perhaps, extensive reading time, personal development of any sort, or even areas of fasting you might be being influenced by a surface dweller. It's a possibility. Even if you are that surface dweller, that could be the reason why you're not able to get to these levels of deeper disciplines, of earlier prayer times, fasting, personal development of any sort. Reading, more reading, more self-help business books, books on life skills, that kind of thing. You could be being influenced by a surface dweller. What is the thing that lingers at the surface of your life that isn't worth anything, but we overvalue it? I'm asking that for a reason. I'm talking to everybody in the back. I don't want you to miss me in this situation. What's the thing that leans at the surface of our life that isn't worth anything, but we overvalue it? I encourage you to write that question down and think about that one, because that one is a gut buster. It has the potential to literally change your life.

Speaker 1:

In the world of metallurgy, there is a process where gold and silver is refined, and even the Bible talks about it and I love some of the ways that it breaks it down. Check this out. It's in the book of Proverbs, so the 25th chapter, the fourth verse, proverbs 25 and four. It says remove the dross from the silver and it becomes a vessel for a silversmith to come forth. It becomes a vessel that is fit to be smith, so to speak. What is dross, d-r-o-s-s? It's something regarded as rubbish, it's worthless, it is a foreign matter, a scum, if you will, that forms on the surface of a metal that is being molted, or molten, excuse me, like gold or silver, for example. If you've ever seen a the process, if you watch shows like how it's made which is one of my favorite shows in the world, how it's made, I love it but if you watch shows, or even if you can find youtube videos on how they do silver smithing and gold smithing and how that process is done. In short, the metal is exposed to intense heat and because of the level of heat that the metal is exposed to, all of the impurities will rise to the top. Man, tell me I don't preach. That preaches, that preaches. When the metal is heat to such a level, because of the intensity of the heat, all the impurities that were hiding in that metal will rise to the the top and that will be dross and it will be cleaned off or skimmed so that all that's left is the pure gold, the pure silver.

Speaker 1:

Back when I was in New York I used to sell jewelry on the streets, stacking it in Long story Talk about it on several podcast episodes. You can find it. It's out there. But sometimes we would have our hands on jewelry that was not authentic. It wasn't 24 karat gold. It might've been stamped that way, it might've been stamped as 10 karat still in silver, or 10 or 1095, but it was not actually authentic silver and gold. It had dross in it and they were selling to people as pure, which was devious, and it was really messed up. But in this situation I want you to think about the heat that I was telling you about and the metal.

Speaker 1:

The whole goal is to achieve purity, to achieve cleanness, to remove all the foreign matter and things that are considered like gross rubbish or scum that doesn't belong in us. That hinders us from being the pure that we need to be. If left unchecked, it could be intermingled or contaminate the pure metal that's going through the fire. Ask yourself this question the next time you go through a trial, the next time you go through the heat of a trial in your life. Ask yourself this question. If you have a pen and paper, write this down too. Ask yourself this question if you have a pen and paper, write this down too.

Speaker 1:

Ask yourself what is God trying to get out of me by going through this trial? What is useless inside of me or without value? What is a foreign matter inside of me that needs to come out? What is scum, what is rubbish inside of me that needs to come out? Now, if you think you're all that in a bag of chips, this might go over your head. But if you recognize that you're a fallible person with issues and problems and struggles and things inside of you, in your heart, that don't belong there, this might help you. But in the midst of the trials, ask yourself this, get ready for it. Ask yourself what is God trying to get out of me? People get scared or they get aggressive when people talk about going to fast, or they hear too much word in the message, or they have too much intensity in public worship, or they have to do too many ministry events too many times in a week. These are the kind of things that define us and they also refine us. It brings us to a better, stronger, more acceptable place of ministry in the heart and mindset and service and in honor.

Speaker 1:

The trials you go through are for our good. I know they're intense. A lot of the times we know that firsthand in our own life has's been throughout our Near 30 year walk with God, we've been through trials that are so hard. Like why are we going through this? And a revelation for me, I believe, was that there's impurities that needed to come out. I experienced it recently and think of yourself as gold and as silver, something that's precious because God says you are.

Speaker 1:

Look at 2 Corinthians, chapter 4 and read that.

Speaker 1:

It'll reveal that God thinks you're precious and how precious God says you are. Look at 2 Corinthians, chapter 4 and read that it will reveal that God thinks you're precious and how precious he thinks you are 2 Corinthians, chapter 4. Check it out, but think about that when you, as gold or silver, that precious metal, that precious jewel, goes through that fire, goes through that trial, there's impurities that have to come out. Don't be afraid to let that happen, because the more intense the heat that you endure, the greater level of impurity that come out of you so that you can be pure before God and valuable before God, the way that you were called to be, the way that you were designed to be. So all those things in your life that linger at the surface of your life that's not worth anything and that are overvalued by you.

Speaker 1:

It's time to change the dynamic. Stop being a surface dweller and I started getting into the deep things of God, the deep things in life, the things that matter. You are like gold and silver You're very precious. There's stuff inside of you that has to come out. Don't be afraid of the heat, whether you are, and have you listening to? The call me, mr you and the inspiration station. Thanks again, make us a part of your week. Have a great day and thanks again for listening. Love to hear from you guys on our social media platforms. We're looking out for you soon. Thanks.
