Speaker 1:I want to talk to you guys about a topic that's just kind of been on my mind and most of my episodes are stuff that's on my mind, so you know what's kind of going on in here for the most part. But I want to talk to you about collaboration. We all know what the term means. For the most part, we're defining it a little bit today on this very brief episode, but I feel like we may understand what it means from a dictionary standpoint, but not what it means from an application standpoint. I think it's a big deal. You know I've done several different things. I'm building a nonprofit right now. I definitely have some background in content creation and, of course, podcasting. We've been almost four years plus in this particular podcasting game. It's been quite a ride. We have so much content out there on Apple Podcasts, spotify, amazon Music and, of course, our YouTube channel and all of our social media platforms, so we're all over the place. We got a lot of information and content out there a little something for everybody.
Speaker 1:But in all of our doing, in our goal setting on this journey that we're on, collaboration is super important. We really can't get around it. Collaboration is supposed to be the action of working with someone to provide or create something of value, whether we're sharing ideas, sharing knowledge, sharing resources. For some strange reason, though, it feels as though we talk about collaboration but we almost have an idea or a view of wanting to want it. We want to collaborate because we recognize deep within ourselves that we can't do these things on our own. We have to have some kind of help. We need somebody to be there to support us, to help us through areas that we haven't been ourselves.
Speaker 1:But when it comes down to it and the rubber meets the road, we drop the ball. We bail on the people that can potentially help us. We bail on the idea of growing ourselves and going beyond our comfort zone In the world of podcasting and content creation. This is very, very accurate and it's something I see on a consistent basis. So if you're a podcast and a content creator, I'm not really speaking to you specifically. If it applies, it wouldn't hurt to make some changes there, but I'm not speaking to anybody in particular in this particular case. But when it came to podcasting, I use myself as an example. Maybe you guys can see a situation through it.
Speaker 1:When I started off four years ago, it was probably one of the worst times of our country's history. I started a podcast in 2020. I was despondent about a lot of things. I think I'm making some major, major, wholesale changes in my life just because of the frustration that I was dealing with, and what I felt led to do was to begin to put my voice, the stories, the experiences that I was living through and put them out here. Crazy enough for introvert, I would never want to do that. No introvert would To put it out here in the broad spectrum, publicly. People can see and hear my story and what I've gone through, where I've done well, where I've failed, and learn from that. We talk about ourselves being the all-purpose part for an all-purpose life because we talk about. I learned some hard lessons. In the beginning, I could have quit based on some things I would experience and I realized that people talk about collaboration and network until it's time to start doing it, and I really feel like that was something that I noticed in the podcast world and the content creating world. I think that you may see it as well.
Speaker 1:I got to ask you some really hard questions here because I want us to make sure that we're walking with integrity. I mean, I try to do that every day of my life to walk with integrity, especially in these settings, in the podcasting content creation realm, in the media realm. But at the same time, I feel like it's just something for us to think about. Are we doing that? Are we walking with integrity and honor in the things that we say we love to do, that we say we want to do as a goal, as a profession? Do we walk with integrity? Do we show up for the people who we promise we're going to show up for? Are we there for the folks that we say we want to connect with, network with, be there, for I got some awesome friends that I have in this media, podcasting, content creation, world people who I wouldn't trade for the world. They've been consistent, they've been upfront, they're always honest and when we can't do something, we work it out and we deal with it, but we always communicate. And then there's some who we had to try to find and chase down because they were supposed to be at a place and they don't show up.
Speaker 1:One of the things that's important about collaboration, in my humble opinion that we need to see the value in each other. In my time in the corporate world, which was a rough situation, I realized that you can do all the hard work that you could possibly do to be noticed, to be looked at. At the end of the day, you're going to always need somebody to help you to get where you need to go. I'm reading some incredible business and life skill books. Now they're kind of speaking to the same thing. I won't name the titles today, it's too many to name, but I realized that you don't have to see the value in yourself. You can see it in others as well, people who are out here. They may have been doing this less time than you, but they may understand some things that you don't. They may have been doing it for five years and you've been doing it for 15, and you don't understand what they've learned in five. So this is an area where humility has to take place. We've got to see the value in each other. Look at the people around you who are doing the things that maybe you aspire to do. Perhaps they can be mentors to you, even when they're younger than you, or they could be less than half your age, but they may be able to help you in the area they're trying to go into. Collaboration is part of that. There's an idea that you really need to see it in order to value it. You've got to be able to envision what you're trying to accomplish and the people who are doing the things you may want to do. That may propel you to where you want to be. Who are doing the things you may want to do. That may propel you to where you want to be. We got to do that.
Speaker 1:There's a gentleman by the name of James Watson and Francis Crick. They're most known for creating the DNA structure that we all know today, that we all understand today. They had common interests. They bargained over those. They discussed their ideas for hours. They communicated with each other. They studied other areas and they shared their notes and they grew together. They were a little bit competitive, but the bottom line was that they grew together and because of that we understand DNA a lot better than we ever would have had they not took on this project, took on this effort James Watson and Francis Quake Look at their stories Incredible To hear what they went through and how they got to the place where they discovered destructive DNA and begin to start fleshing out what it means and how it affects all of us generationally.
Speaker 1:It's a really incredible story. But my point in mentioning their names at all is because they collaborated with each other. They bonded over common interests. They shared notes. They weren't trying to one-up each other and trying to get a leg up over each other. They weren't trying to steal each other's subscribers. They weren't trying to steal show ideas or steal content off of their social media websites. That's not what they were doing. They had some competition in them because they wanted to achieve great things that people said they could never do. But they always studied with each other, they shared notes, they bonded and put the time to be intentional about bonding with each other, discussing ideas for hours and hours for days and days coming up with solutions, but they did it together.
Speaker 1:If there's no other point at this episode today, I hope you get the main point we need each other. Yeah, I want to get some subs on my YouTube channel. I want to get to a certain goal that we have. We ask, we hope and we do things. We do sub for subs all the time, but the bottom line is that the person you're talking to has to see you. We have to see each other. We have to see each other's value, see each other's impact's each other's value. It's each other's impact. It's each other's worth.
Speaker 1:If you don't see my worth, if you don't see my value, I can ask you all day to subscribe to my YouTube channel or subscribe to our brand of shows, but you won't do it, not because you're busy, not because you don't have time to press a button, because of course, you do. Everybody has time to press a button. If you don't see my value, if you don't see my impact, my worth, why I do what I'm doing and what I'm doing it for, what the goal and the mission is, if you can't see that, if you can't hear it, you're not going to support us. So for me, as a fellow collaborator, I tell you this today and I give you the solemn promise today that if I see you and I value you and I see your worth I'm going to try my best to try to help you, even if it doesn't particularly help me. Come up, I'm going to try to help you every single time. I think there's some people out here who are watching this show right now that know I'm a man of my word when it comes to that, and I've done it. I'm going to continue to keep doing it. If I haven't done a good enough job, I'll do better today. I'll do better tomorrow. But as collaborators we got to see each other's value.
Speaker 1:Take the time to listen. Talk to your fellow potential collaborators, listen to what they're saying, look at what they're doing, try to get the big picture, see the impact that it could potentially have if they have a little bit of help, and then hopefully they'll do the same for you. Hope you enjoyed this episode today. It's a real quick one. Hope it made sense to you.
